XTERRA is an international race format that gives endurance athletes around the world a chance to experience some of the most diverse, spectacular and challenging natural environments on the planet – from tropical jungles to snow-capped mountain ranges. Professional triathletes compete for more than US$458,000 in pro prize monies while amateurs age group “Warriors” race for national and regional titles and coveted slots to race at the de-facto off-road World Championships in Maui, Hawaii.
XTERRA Malaysia 2016 was held in the beautiful island of Langkawi, Kedah on 7th and 8th May 2016. It’s not a new race though as it started life in Putrajaya just outside Kuala Lumpur in 2013 and moved to Langkawi in 2015. This island, still unknown to many, has a natural history dating back to 550 million years and is now recognized as one of UNESCO’s 94 Geoparks in the world – offering natural river estuaries meandering amongst mountainous formations and surrounded by untouched tropical rainforests. This reason alone has made Langkawi a natural choice to host XTERRA Malaysia and when you add to this its solid reputation as a cultural and duty-free shopping centre with many world class tourist resorts like The Berjaya Resort Langkawi (our host resort for the race) you have all the ingredients for a perfect tropical race destination for the entire family.
