https://propertiesbordeaux.com/chateau-france-gironde_1592163/ Michael Baynes explains in an interview why he thinks this Chateau for sale near Bordeaux, France (exclusively with Maxwell-Baynes) is such a ‘treasure’.
At the heart of the most highly acclaimed city in Europe at the moment – Bordeaux, France – is this remarkable Chateau in Italianate style dating back to the end of the 19th Century. It is in outstanding condition and set in parkland of just over four hectares which are surrounded by vineyards on three sides. Large, light and elegant reception rooms provide stunning entertainment spaces within a well thought-out and comfortable floor plan. Sweeping stone staircase, 10 main bedrooms – all with private bathrooms and TV points – some with dressing rooms, nine with parquet floors and recently re-decorated, some with private terraces. The master bedroom suite has air-conditioning, a sitting room, ‘his and her’ bathrooms, walk -n closet and fireplace. Large kitchen facilities for catering, offices, one staff bedroom, a home entertainment room as well as a first-class wine cellar. Large swimming pool and pool house complete the Bordeaux lifestyle experience. The chateau blends both “grandeur” and modern comforts within spaces that are impressive but understated. Visitors are immediately in awe of the grand reception rooms dominated by a gracious staircase that underwrites the arrival experience and walls ready to showcase fine art and tapestry.
The origins of the chateau are undoubtedly 19th century. However, it is believed that it was completed in 1897 by the celebrated Bordeaux architect Tauzin at the request of the Count of Mandreau and his son-in-law the Baron Oberkampf. The Palladian inspiration is clear in the decorative exterior features: loggias, balustrades and architectural scaling that showcase a chateau that is truly one of a kind in Bordeaux and quite possibly the whole of the South West France region. Its history is fascinating – not least due to the links with the Oberkampf family and their notoriety as France’s leading manufacturers of the quintessentially French “Toile de Jouy” – a decorative fabric wall covering that is still popular today in the finest residences in France.
Today, examples of the Oberkampf Toile can be seen in two panels upon the dining-room wall alongside the fireplace. The formal dining room, replete with its table, can entertain 15 guests comfortably and provides the perfect setting for enjoying the French experience at its finest. In time-honoured French style, guests can receive an aperitif in the formal salon with views over the estate to the south. Then crossing a corridor linking the building front to back, the dining room offers the ultimate entertaining experience served by its kitchen immediately adjacent.
