Vicki Adrian brings a daily dose of Inspiration & Education for Remarkable Retailers and Savvy Entrepreneurs. In today’s episode, Vicki talks about one of the most important ways that YOU make a difference, and that is in the lives of other professionals in your field.
I absolutely couldn’t WAIT to work on this episode! As a long time retailer, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that reaching out and building a network of passionate, progressive, nose-to-the-ground, hard-working, creative, inspiring, giving, AH-MAZING business owners has been life-changing for me as both a retailer and to me personally.
I have sometimes struggled with the fact that I don’t do anything monumental for mankind…I don’t save peoples lives like a nurse or doctor would do, I don’t fight battles for our freedom like our brave men and women in the military do and I don’t think I will ever invent anything that will change the world… I am a merchant…I sell purses, and clothing, and gourmet foods. However, I want you to know that both YOU and I, DO make a difference in the lives of others, and the work we do IS IMPORTANT to our family, our customers and to our colleagues!
For the first couple of decades in business, I really knew only a handful of others in our industry. Of course, when I saw familiar people at market or at a buying meeting, I was friendly and talkative (no surprise there on the talkative side for you is there?) … but I didn’t take that next step and build a relationship with them outside of that.
All of that changed when I met my friend Terri King, owner of My Secret Garden. I know I’ve told this story before, but in case you missed it, Terri and I were both members of Bob Negan’s Whiz Bang Training Master Class, where I think 4 of us met with Bob on a regular basis for a group coaching phone call. Well, Terri & I hit it off from the very beginning, and started chatting outside of the coaching sessions, (we call this our “cyber-dating” era)…after several months, we decided to meet personally at the next Market.
The rest is history. Terri and I became fast friends, and she introduced me to new thoughts, ideas and ways to run a business, along with her circle of retail friends, and I did the same for her. We are each gifted in very different areas, and it is that diversity that makes for good teammates.
This circle, that started with Terri, has grown to include many, many of you that are listening today. I think of Carol, from Overland Park, Kansas who I get to see this week, as we are attending a conference together, Connie from Arlington, Texas, who I can’t wait to see later this month, Genia from Wheatland, Wyoming, Flo & Steve from Michigan, Linda Banfill from California, Shelly Bartel, Janet Chinn & Catherine Tatum, who rarely miss one of the Remarkable Retailer Episodes, Brad & Sandy from Wisconsin, Suzanne from Colorado, Teresa and Sara from Indianapolis…and the list could go on and on and on.
What I want to say to you today is this… YOU are making a difference in the lives of other professionals that you surround yourself with! All of these people that I mentioned above, THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE…on almost a daily basis! As fellow business owners, they speak my language, they struggle with the same challenges that I face. There is no need for small talk. We can jump right in to a conversation or a text or an email, and work together to solve problems.
If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed as a business owner, I would be happy to schedule a complimentary 15 minute Coaching Session with you…Just go to http://bit.ly/WorkWithVicki (show sign here) and you can easily schedule a call or Zoom meeting on my calendar.
I’ll end with this today, Stretch your Boundaries! Get out of your comfort zone, it might feel a little bit like junior high when you’re looking for someone to sit with at lunch, but I promise you, once you start to make these connections, you will never be sorry! Do you follow another store on Facebook? Take it one step further and email the owner. Get an accountability partner to meet with each week, or invest in the life of a business owner who is a little bit behind you in experience. It is worth the investment!
Until next time, choose to be REMARKABLE!
